Venerable Taiwanese actor and singer Barbie Hsu has been crowned Asia's Sexiest Vegetarian woman for 2009, and Bollywood superstar and heartthrob Shahid Kapoor has won the title of Asia's Sexiest Vegetarian man.
Actor Portia de Rossi was voted Australia's Sexiest Vegetarian woman, and Australian Idol host Andrew G has taken the men's title.
Barbie—who has been called "The Queen of Beauty"—is best known for her roles in Taiwanese dramas and numerous films. She got her first big break with the hit TV show Meteor Garden and also appeared on the TV series Mars alongside Vic Zhou. Her most recent film is Connected, which earned her a Best Actress nomination at the Hong Kong Film Awards. "I think we should respect the life of all species, a dog, a person ...," says Barbie. "Lives are equal, eating meat is like eating corpses to me and it makes me feel sick and sad."
Shahid trained under legendary choreographer Shiamak Davar and is credited with having convinced Kareena Kapoor to go vegetarian when they were dating. He will appear in the upcoming, highly anticipated film Kaminey.
Geelong-born Portia, who went vegan with her partner, popular TV host Ellen DeGeneres, says of her decision to forgo animal products, "It feels like such a compassionate choice. We are such animal lovers, why stop short of cows and chickens? It didn't make any sense. When Ellen and I first got together I was wearing fur and Ellen was wearing very expensive Italian calfskin leather. She was giving me a hard time about wearing the fur and I said, 'Why is a fox any more important than a cow?' We took that idea and went all the way with it. We are doing what we can."
Andrew, who has been vegetarian for more than 10 years, originally made the decision to give up meat to save cash. "I was 19, unemployed and could only afford one meat meal a week," he said. "Then I started to realise that I felt healthier and better. All the weird rashes went away and my brain got clearer. The cleaner I kept my diet, the more obvious benefits I felt."
Now vegan, Andrew says of his decision, "It's better for me, better for the world, and better for other living things."
